Traffic Engineering Plans for Hyde Park Streets

Background
: Last November, without discussion or notice to the community, the Traffic Engineering section of the Department of Transportation & Engineering (T&E) implemented a "road diet" eliminating one of the traffic lanes in each direction on Erie Avenue between Zumstein Avenue and Madison Road. This change has many residents justifiably upset.

The Hyde Park Neighborhood Council (HPNC) has conducted multiple public meetings with representatives of T&E during which many residents expressed their concerns. None of safety issues raised has resulted in any acceptable modifications to T&E plans for Erie Avenue.

Recent Activity: At a meeting with T&E representatives on July 21, the Executive Officers of HPNC submitted a report (download here) written by a resident that clearly defines the concerns and problems. The Council also submitted a proposed compromise solution for Erie Avenue. It was subsequently rejected.

At one of the earlier meetings, T&E disclosed additional plans for changes on Observatory Avenue and on Madison Road. At HPNC request, T&E electronically supplied all of their plans for Hyde Park streets which are shown below. The HPNC continues to work towards getting the plans modified or withdrawn.

Latest Action: City Council Member Leslie Ghiz submitted a motion to City Council to restore Erie Avenue to its original configuration. (Download and read the motion here.) The motion has been referred to the Council Livable Communities Committee for consideration. The next meeting of the Committee is on September 14 at 2PM in Council Chambers of City Hall. It is not known at this time if this motion will be on the agenda.

You can help by talking to and writing members of City Council and asking them to support the motion. (See list of council members email addresses shown below).

Hyde Park Public Works Projects - 2010

In all projects, access and local traffic will be maintained.

GREATER CINCINNATI WATER WORKS
Water Main Replacement
The project is along Erie Avenue from Edwards Road to Marburg Avenue and is the replacement of the existing water main (early 1900's) with a new 12" Ductile Iron Water Main. All services connections within this area will also be restored/reconnected.
The project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in July and last until about the end of the year. GCWW will make an effort to schedule work areas so as not to disrupt events planned along the route.

DUKE - GAS LINES
Gas line replacement was ordered state wide by Ohio PUCO.  The utility companies have up to ten years to complete the job. Duke has subcontracted the work out to various companies.
The work is not done in a sequential manner thus work zones may be found scattered all around Hyde Park.
In addition to digging up the street to install replacement lines, the local service connections from the street to the building meter will be replaced. As a result many sidewalks will be torn up for the house connections.
Some of the sub-contractors immediately replace the concrete, while others use temporary blacktop and will have the concrete replacement done at a later time.
